Getting Down With The Oldies Dancefest At Mccain Headquarters

The blogospheres buzzing tonight with news that the McCain campaign is using the music of ABBA to woo disaffected Clinton voters. The excitement began with the “news leak” that Sen. McCain is fond of the Swedish popsters.

If McCain really wanted to capitalize on some Democrats’ disaffection with Obama’s victories, there’s an entire library of oldies sung from the point of view he wants — that of the good guy proclaiming his love to a woman that’s been mistreated by a Lothario. Johnny Rivers sang in one of them, “I can’t blame you for trying/I’m trying to make it too.” That’s a good start.

But wait — better not use the Johnny Rivers song. Its chorus will remind too many voters what would happen under a third Bush McCain term: “Welcome back, baby, to the poor side of town.”

The best choice probably would’ve been that classic by Jerry Butler and the Impressions (written by Curtis Mayfield), “He Will Break Your Heart (He Don’t Love You Like I Love You).”
