Special Mothers Day Tribute To A Special Mom

Love is when someone helps you discover something about yourself you never knew. Love is when someone hurts deeply when they see you upset. Love is when someone always gives you a second chance and still loves you even before you say you’re sorry. For the past 24 years, I have been blessed with showers of love from my mother. She is my role model, she is my confidant, she is my best friend.
My mother, Wendy Chen, grew up in Taiwan, immigrated to the United States for graduate school and raised two children while working full time as a biochemist. Like so many other immigrants, she came to this country so that her children could grow up surrounded by opportunity. While we have always been close, my friendship with my mother truly began to blossom after I graduated from college - after I finally realized the level of sacrifice she has made for me all these years. I found that once I began to open my eyes, the signals of her love were all around.
There are so many things I love about my mother. I love how she serves her church community through her involvement with three separate fellowships, the church newsletter and the church worship team. I love how she stays involved with my brother’s extracurricular activities, volunteering regularly with his speech and debate team in high school. I love how she is young at heart and chats with me and my brother regularly online, forwarding funny e-mails and YouTube links to brighten our days. It brings a smile to my eyes every time I see her chat using Internet abbreviations. The phrases “lol (laughing out loud),” “omg (oh my god)” and “brb (be right back)” are peppered throughout our daily chat logs.
Most importantly, I love how she loves. I think one of the most important lessons she’s taught me is that people deserve second chances and, until proven otherwise, should be given the benefit of the doubt.
Sometimes I see my mother chat with my 16-year-old brother about pursuing his dreams. Rather than telling him to focus solely on his academics, she encourages him to also chase after his passions in dance and music. Although I work in the finance industry, I too am blessed by her encouragement to never forget my own love for music and to sing regularly. Sometimes I think that my mother thinks about our family both first thing in the morning, and last thing at night. I know we are in her daily prayers.
It is an honor to be my mother’s daughter. So much of who I am, and what I hope to become, I owe to her. People always worry about growing up and becoming their mothers. I think I’d be pretty lucky if I ever came close.
