Love: Can’t We Talk About Something Else

Paul McCartney was right: People do want to fill the world with silly love songs.
But who was the first troubadour — a 12th and 13th century love poet or a songwriter that decided hey, maybe if I sing about love I’ll get the girl?
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of love songs out there that are wonderful; “Your Song” by Elton John gets me every time. But there are songs currently on the radio about love and lust that I feel have a general theme that has been performed a hundred times.
The song “Mercy” by Duffy is a song about throwing morals out the window to appease a special someone. Instead of intriguing lyrics, however, it’s full of “yeah, yeah, yeahs” and other commonplace phrases.
What’s the point? Catchy, yes; but emotionally, it accomplishes nothing.
I raise the question: Why is almost every song out there about love, anyway? I understand it’s a powerful emotion, but I think it’d be interesting if all artists decided to transition their song topics from heartbreak to politics or the economy.
That way, if you’ve just gotten out of a complicated relationship, it won’t pull on your heartstrings and make you want to crawl into bed with your head under the covers every time you turn on the radio.
On second thought, hearing a song about gas prices might hurt just as much as hearing a love song post-breakup.
