Alexie Perks Up Sonics Proceedings

What they need at the U.S. Courthouse in Seattle is a barista serving coffee or a waitress serving cocktails because this Sonics trial drones on at times, and any kind of refreshment would be welcome.
Fortunately a pick-me-up arrived Thursday in the form of another man in a dark suit, yet this one was not an attorney. Sherman Alexie, a well-known author and contributor to The Stranger, took the stand and turned into an entertaining quote machine.
“It’s love long distance,” Alexie said, “but love long distance fades.”
That would hurt. His and others’ love for the Sonics is generational. He sees grandmothers with grandkids at games. At the last game, he talked to a couple that had brought their son’s drawing of the Sonics when he was 6 years old. He’s 36 now.
Alexie grew closer to his dad through their connection to the NBA. His dad was a Lakers fan, stemming back to their days in Minneapolis. Several years ago he recalls taking his dad to his near-courtside seats at KeyArena.
Said Alexie: “It was an acknowledgment of an incredible journey. He and my mother enabled that journey to happen. Now I sit in KeyArena with my father’s ghost.”
