Love Looks Back At Limp And Lumps

Among the damaged and surgically repaired leg joints being discussed on this U.S. Open cruise, Davis Love III’s ankle is in steerage, with Tiger Woods’ knee in a stateroom.
That’s how it goes in golf. Tiger is royalty. That doesn’t mean Love must resort to being bled with leeches. But face it, Tiger is Tiger and most everybody else is everybody else, as Woods is proving with yet another of his dramatic episodes, firing a 3-under 68 yesterday at Torrey Pines South (which he’d own if it were not a municipal). He’s 2-under for the tournament, one stroke behind leader Stuart Appleby.
That Woods has been able to do what he’s doing without having played competitive golf since April’s Masters can only be considered Tigeresque. But his injury wasn’t as serious and his recovery time nowhere near as long as was Love’s. And Love has almost 12 years on Woods.
“Well, he’s gotten good at coming back from that knee,†Love said. “But he’s very strong, and I think I heard somebody say it yesterday one of the announcers said: ‘It’s time to stop talking about the knee; it’s the layoff that’s the hard part.’
“Gosh, to come back and compete without testing it, that’s what’s amazing about him. I was thinking he might pop up at Memphis, just to test it. Once you get the knee healthy, you have to get the brain healthy. And there are very few people that seem to be able to help you with that. It’s playing the game that’s hard.â€
